Exploring our church

Crossing Point
Have you ever noticed a church in a setting that looks odd, or incomplete? Perhaps it’s because there is no burial ground, and hence no lych-gate. Think of the classic ‘picture postcard’ church, and your mind’s eye may well put a lych-gate in prominent place; a substantial roofed gateway leading into the churchyard. Here at Edgbaston Old Church, there is a fine Victorian example.

The Agony in the Garden
Depictions of the night Jesus spends in prayer in the garden of Gethsemane, immediately following the Last Supper, are known as ‘The Agony in the Garden’.

Host of Angels
Over the centuries artists have portrayed angels in different ways. There are the delightful ‘putti’ so beloved of the Italian masters, and here at Edgbaston Old Church we have several windows and carvings depicting this type of angel.
